NZ Anthem poster
Commissioned A1 poster design for the University of Otago. This poster was distributed to every School in New Zealand and proved to be very popular. Recently featured in an article in NZ Pro Design Magazine. Stoked with the response I’ve had for this one. The original Ahua Maori pencil sketch was done by my good friend Matu Pene.
Otago student David Foes dug the design so much he’s had it inked up! still a work in progress in the below apparantly, thanks for sending through the pic David, ..and for asking first! Ill try track down a finished photo.

hey chris,
i take it that all the work on this page is yours…you sport some serious talent!
i am an NZ citizen, but have lived in Canada for the better part of life thus far. I have been wanting to get a tattoo that shows my love of nz without stealing ta moko or having a nation outline tattoo show up looking like a birth mark…the design you have here is awesome, and i’d like to use it.
yeah, its too bad someone has already done it, but i think i’d like to keep in on file as an idea, and potentially use it in the not so distant future. i’m thinking something on a bigger scale, and likely filled in, or with some sort of ta moko inspired lines added.
are you cool with all this?

This is a beautiful desgin I really like it. It just makes it that much more a new zealand design. It is something to be hugely proud of :O)

Hey,
I’m lovin’ the design. I have been in New Zealand a couple of times, once living there, but am in love with the place and consider it a second home. I have been looking around for the best idea to use a simple topographical map of NZ as a tattoo, but then I came across this and just wanted to see if I could have your permission to use it on my arm? It incredibly beautiful and I would love to use it if that is ok with you?! Give me a heads up ASAP as I have been struggling to find something that really spoke to me until I saw this! Thanks man!

Hey,
Fell in love with the design the minute i saw it. Like those above i would like to seek permission to possibly use the idea as a tattoo. I’ve been trying to find something that truely shows my idea of NZ pride without doing the obvious like getting NZ emblems and logos and outlines. The design might end up changed a bit but thought I’d still ask before I did anything to it and got my hopes up.

Hey,
also wondering if ink this up? i love it as soon as i saw the poster in my careers office and when i saw it on this site i was like woah!
thinking of using it as is with two ferns pointing in either side

Hey its been a long time searching for a design good enough to get put on me for the rest of my life, and this is just the ticket.
its a cracker thats for sure.
is there any chance i can have an email copy to print off for an artist to do the work?

okay, sorry to be un-original, but your design rocks, as my daughter would say you have "mad skills".
I have often wondered about what I would get as a tattoo, and if I do get one, I would like to use this, with your permission of course.

You will surely be getting blown away with the responses to this design! I’m an expat - living in Oz and like the others above wanted a tattoo that spoke of where I came from as this would be my first - As others have said - this really does that. as far as all the requests (and future requests) for having the design inked-up. Im happy for you to have our design tattooed, although I’d prefer that (a) you are a Kiwi! and (b) that you make contact and send through a digital photo so I can eventually add them all to this post.

Like all the others, i fully think this is great. Iv been looking for a fern design for so long, iv seen so many but none that REALLY grab my attention, im after something unique, with some sort of design either around the base or around the tattoo. Any idea’s at all..? Im open to seeing anything. anyone..?

WOW!!!! This is amazing, I have been looking for a great Nz design for a while and finally I found it!! It is amazing. Me and a friend are planning a tramping trip to New Zealand and we wanted to get a tattoo done there… we’ve been looking for an inspirational image to base out design on… and I think this one is absolutely perfect one… I’ve read that people are asking permission and access to a file of somesort… could I ask for them as well!?

Fantastic design - am absolutely in awe. I have a slightly bizarre request, I’m a kiwi living in the UK and just getting back into bike racing. I was going to get my bike resprayed and would love to put something on there to signify my NZ origin. Seeing your design it would be perfect to put on the head tube - I wondered if you would be happy for this to be done and if you could possibly provide a good quality jpeg or gif so I could have the transfers made.
Completely understand if you don’t want to do this and naturally would provide you with photo’s of the finished article.

Hey!!!Wow, you must be getting sick of these emails by now! As all the other people who have sent in messages, I am also keen to get this done as a tattoo..I’m planning on getting it done before I head off on a big OE…this design is awesome and the best I have seen so far in my searching:). Chris, I have been searching for a meaningful expression of my kiwi roots and you have nailed it my friend, I am born and bred Otago now living in West Oz enjoying the sun and surf!! The fact that you are from my home city lends even greater weight.

heya. i have been looking for a tattoo design for awhile and when i saw this design in the school library i knew that it was i wanted!!! i know your site says that people can use your design(which is, im sure, much appreciated by many!), but i would feel rude to not ask permission. Chris - feel free to use the design as a Tattoo, you can read my thoughts/preferences regarding this in above posts (ie: ideally that you are a Kiwi)
Nicole - feel free to add to the design, I wouldn’t have time personally to help you out with it, but some others have already had it tattooed and added their own touches.

I absolutely adore this design. So beautiful. I was wondering if i would be able to use this design on my year 13 leavers jumper for my class as the hole class has fallen in love with the idea of having this on our jumper and we have a few exchange students who would love to be able to take this design back to their countries on their jumpers. I think this is truly a great design of NZ with both a cultural and contemporary feel. I would like to get it inked myself, but as so many others have done the same I may have it incorporated if thats ok with you. I also have enjoy the occasional painting and wondered if you would mind if i use the image to do a purely personal piece for my bedroom.
I hope that this will not be the only piece used from you as I think you really have a great idea of both what works and what people like.
